Manatee Planning Commission OK's large sign for near Ellenton outlet mall

MANATEE -- The Manatee County Planning Commission on Thursday OK'd plans for a two-sided, 672-square-foot digital sign outside the Ellenton Ice & Sports Complex.

"We're really reducing the size of the sign," said Hugh McGuire, an attorney representing complex owners Marvin Kaplan and Mike Bennett, who is a Bradenton state senator.

McGuire said the business, located adjacent to the Ellenton Premium Outlets mall, had previously won approval for an 880-square-foot digital sign.

But its owners, after investigating such a sign's $1 million to $2 million cost, had decided on a smaller version.

The smaller version would cost from $600,000 to $700,000, Kaplan said after the meeting at County Administrative Center.

The plan is slated to go before the Manatee County Commission in June for final approval, Kaplan said.

If the commission approves, the sign could go up within about 120 days outside the complex, Kaplan said.

The ice and sports complex is located near the intersection of Interstate 75 and U.S. Highway 301.
