Manatee-Sarasota leaders eye joint emergency radio network

MANATEE -- At a joint meeting of the Manatee and Sarasota county commissions, officials decided today to direct their top administrators to continue discussion of specific ways in which the two counties might collaborate to economize.

The two commissions agreed such discussions should include for the moment efforts to purchase and operate an emergency radio network; continued coordination of transit operations, and ways they might coordinate criminal justice efforts.

Sarasota County Commission Nora Patterson suggested the two county administrators should continue talking, and bring back reports on how best the effort at "regionalism" might go forward.

Patterson also sought a report on Manatee County's formal plan to try to halt the killing of animals in its care by year's end under a formal resolution and plan approved by the commission.

Patterson noted, "It sounds like it's really working."
