Natalie Wilson, 7, of Bradenton, leans over the Green Bridge Fishing Pier, trying for her second catch of the day Saturday at the 2010 Jerry Hill Memorial Kids Fishing Tournament in Palmetto. She would have made Jerry proud. It was an endearing sight to see more than 150 kids with their parents and family members patiently teaching them the art of the catch. Coming on the heels of the potentially disastrous oil spill unfurling in the gulf waters — the ultimate effects of which have yet to be determined — it’s a strong reminder that the legacy of the natural treasures that surround us need to be cherished and protected. It’s nothing less than a way of life for many of us in Manatee County, and hopefully the day will never come when we have to explain to our children why we can’t go swimming or fishing in the local waters.
