Fuel spill caused Skyway traffic jam

PINELLAS — A fuel spill that occurred in a collision between a box truck and a van on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge Monday evening caused a major rush hour traffic jam that left motorists stuck in traffic for hours.

Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskins said at around 6 p.m. the truck and van collided in the northbound lanes of the bridge on the Pinellas County side. The truck overturned, causing a fuel spill that caused the closing of the inside north and southbound lanes of the bridge.

The lane closures lasted about an hour and a half, causing serious headaches for motorists. The driver of the truck was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, while the driver of the van was not injured, Gaskins said.

“The major problem came from the fuel spill that we had to clean up,” Gaskins said. “We had to close lanes on both sides to get vehicles in to clean up the spill.”
