UNIVERSITY PARK -- A Whole Foods Market, the second in the region, will be going up across the street from the Fresh Market.
The 40,000-square-foot organic grocery store, which will be built at Honore Avenue and University Parkway, was announced as part of the Austin, Texas-based company's first quarter earnings report.
While Whole Foods has signed the lease, there is no specific schedule for store construction, although the store is scheduled to open within two years, according to a press release.
"We are working with Sarasota County to start construction as early as possible," said Jeff Garrison, a partner at SJ Collins Enterprises, an Atlanta-based retail developer.
SJ Collins Enterprises will build a shopping center at that intersection adjacent to the IntegraClick Park.
Whole Foods will anchor the "high-energy lifestyle center," according to Garrison.
"Whole Foods Market will be joined by restaurants and boutiques that share (Whole Foods) value in promoting health and wellness," Gar
Congestion around The Mall at University Town Center, prompted Whole Foods to open further west on University Parkway.
"Benderson is developing a Class A mall with a regional draw," Garrison said. "Given the typical (Whole Foods) guest makes multiple visits per week, a mall location is not conducive to that shopping pattern."
Fresh Market, another organic grocery store, is located on the north side of University Parkway and will be across from the new Whole Foods.
The Sarasota store announcement was one of 11 store leases announced. The other U.S. stores are planned for Baltimore, Bellingham, Wash., Bridgewater, N.J, Charlotte, N.C., Chicago, Mandeville, La., and Toledo, Ohio. The Canadian stores are planned for Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta and Victoria, British Columbia.
There are 408 Whole Foods and an additional 116 stores in development.
