UNIVERSITY PARK--It's raining tacos for Poppo's.
The Anna Maria-based company will open its fourth location since opening a little more than a year ago, thanks to another lease signed with Benderson Development Co.
Poppo's Taqueria signed a five-year lease at the Shoppes at University Town Center for a 1,791-square-foot space and plans to open in late summer.
"When that location became available in that very busy corridor, we felt we needed to do it," said Micheal Coleman, an operating partner for the restaurant headed up by sons Casey, John and Patrick.
Poppo's serves hormone-free, all-natural Mission-style Mexican food and also dabbles with serving wild hogs for its pork. The restaurant earned its name from Coleman's father, whose nickname was Poppo.
Poppo's already has a 2,557-square-foot location in the works in East Manatee at Benderson's Lockwood Commons on the corner of State Road 70 and Lockwood Ridge Road, which is expected to open in the spring.
The restaurant opened its 6725 Manatee Ave. location in June at another Benderson shopping center. Its original Anna Maria restaurant on 212 C Pine Ave. opened in February 2013. The UTC location could have opened first, but Poppo's was flexible and opted for the Manatee location as its second location instead, Coleman said.
Coleman's family always expected success with Poppo's, just not this soon.
"We figured the time frame would be several more years than it was, so we're a couple years ahead than we thought that might happen," he said.
Each restaurant has the same core menu but will have its own feel with the decor and painting. The Colemans are well versed in the construction and art business, having completed buildings on Pine Avenue in Anna Maria. Casey, John and Patrick and family all put their artistic spin on salvaged items and use of woodwork to create an eclectic atmosphere.
"We want each unit to be unique and non-chain oriented," Coleman said. "Each location needs to be reflective of where it is."
