Jobless rate drops slightly in April
TALLAHASSEE -- Florida's jobless rate dipped slightly in April.
The state's unemployment rate dropped to 5.6 percent this past month. That's a slight decline from the previous month. Florida added 24,500 jobs last month according to figures released Friday by the Department of Economic Opportunity.
The state's jobless rate remains higher than the national rate of 5.4 percent. There are about 542,000 unemployed Floridians.
Gov. Rick Scott announced the new unemployment rate at a central Florida medical products company. Scott has made job creation the main focus during his time in office.
Monroe County at Florida's southern end has the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 3.6 percent. Citrus and Putnam counties in the north-central portion of the state have the highest rates at 7.2 percent.
Rising seniors, graduates offered job education
MANATEE -- CareerSource Suncoast will offer its Journey to Success program to 50 rising high school seniors and graduates from Manatee and Sarasota counties.
The five week program, set to begin June 8, provides life and work skills for job placement.
Workshops on employability and life skills, work readiness and financial literacy will be available to program attendants. Graduates from the program can enter the workforce, improve on skills with postsecondary education or continue on to the Journey to Success year-round program, where they are placed into one of six paths: Leadership and entrepreneurship development, GED preparation, work experience, employment and training, life skills training or occupational skills training.
Students must be currently enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade in Manatee or Sarasota county as well as meet additional eligibility requirements. Bus passes or gas cards will be provided to assist with transportation needs, and all participants will be eligible for a $550 stipend.

Hiring event set for manufacturing company
SARASOTA -- A job fair is set for Thursday for a Bradenton manufacturing company.
Kelly Services in conjuction with CareerSource Suncoast is set to host the event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 28 at the CareerSource Suncoast Sarasota Career Center, 3660 N. Washington Blvd.
Interviews will be held for air conditioning technicians, assemblers, CNC operators, electricians, fabricators, maintenance technicians, material handlers and parts department planners. Positions pay between $11 and $14.94 per hour.
