Aldi buys acreage for new store in East Manatee

MANATEE -- A Germany-based grocery store chain is set to bring its second location to Manatee County.

Discount grocer Aldi has purchased 4 acres at the northeast corner of State Road 70 and 45th Street East for a store recently approved by Manatee County. According to county property records, the company paid almost $1.75 million for four parcels owned by two parties May 20.

Aldi, which operates about 1,400 stores in the United States and nearly 10,000 worldwide, already has one store in Manatee County on Cortez Road in West Bradenton. Its new location will be typical of Aldi stores, which tend to be smaller than most supermarkets. The store is planned to measure roughly 17,000 square feet.

The company is jumping into a competitive grocery market. Walmart announced plans last month to build its first Manatee County Neighborhood Market across the street from Aldi's property on 26 acres previously occupied by a Winn-Dixie store.

A Publix supermarket is also in the neighborhood, in the Lockwood Commons shopping center at Lockwood Ridge Road and S.R. 70.

According to the selling agents in the transaction, Joe Hembree and Ken Hoskinson Jr. with Sarasota commercial real estate firm Hembree & Associates, a protracted closing period preceded the sale.

The sellers were Joann DesRosiers of Sarasota and Route 70 Holdings, also of Sarasota.

The county board of commissioners approved Aldi's application to build its new store in March.
