Local BioFlorida chapter honored for active year

FORT LAUDERDALE -- Florida's leading bio science and bio tech industry group has singled out its Sarasota-Bradenton chapter as its most active and best led in 2014.

During the organization's 17th annual conference last week, BioFlorida gave two separate BioFlorida Chapter Awards to the two chairmen of the Sarasota-Bradenton group. Michael Van Butsel of DPR construction, the chapter's business chair, and science chair James Humphrey were both honored.

The BioFlorida Chapter Award recognizes the most influential and active of the organization's eight regional chapters. The chapters are volunteer led and serve as BioFlorida's regional link to the life science community in the area.

According to a press release from BioFlorida, Butsel and Humphrey "organized a dynamic leadership team including a cross section of academics, economic development council's, core scientific companies and related life science businesses."

The chapter started its work this past March, holding three chapter meetings with attendance ranging between 60 and 75. It also started a new BioFlorida event named The BioTech Expo. It was last month at New College of Florida. The expo showcased science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, and drew more than 150 attendees.
