LAKEWOOD RANCH -- The Lakewood Ranch Health & Wellness Expo coincides with the year-long celebration of the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center's 10th anniversary and organizers are hoping for a large turnout.
This year's event begins at 10 a.m. Saturday in the hospital's main lobby, 8330 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., across from Main Street.
"The expo presents a wonderful opportunity to learn about a wide variety of health and wellness resources that are available locally. It also allows for individuals to learn more about their health and educate themselves on options that can enhance their personal health and wellness," said Lisa Kirkland, manager of marketing and volunteer services for Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.
With more than 50 local health and wellness exhibitors offering information, product samples and services ranging from fitness to diet, and encompassing oral, mental and physical health, everyone can benefit.
The hosital's Women & Children's Center will share information about its labor and delivery services, Pediatrican Johnny Alvarez will provide information about the pediatric unit. Specialists will explain 3D mammography and a radiologist from the medical center will answer questions about imaging services.
"Many of the exhibitors
on hand will focus on preventive medicine, the heart and circulatory system, and the importance of physical activity and proper nutrition. The expo is interactive and valuable to your health," said Lori Basilone, director of community activities for Lakewood Ranch. "Healthcare is huge in the state of Florida. It's a large retiree-type state but our community is different. We have a lot of families and we draw all age groups."
In addition to the expo activities, as part of the medical center's anniversary festivities, tours of the orthopedic spine and joint center, the pediatric unit and the breast health center are scheduled, along with free health checks and children's activities.
Blood pressure checks, glucose screenings for diabetes, eye and ear tests, spinal screenings, and free chair massages are available to attendees. A kids zone will be set up on the lawn and under the atrium of the medical center. The PNC Bank Mobile Learning Unit will be available. Children also are encouraged to bring their favorite toy to the Radio Disney-hosted Doc McStuffins Toy Check-Up activity booth.
The medical center lobby will contain three anniversary cake-ball towers filled with treats, created by Sweet Doctors, a local bakery.
"This is a great way to give yourself a jump start year-round and not just as a New Year's resolution," Basilone added.
