Carter Psychology Center opens office at Lakewood Ranch

LAKEWOOD RANCH -- Carter Psychology Center, which is marking its 25th year in Bradenton, opened a new office in Lakewood Ranch this month.

It's no coincidence that the center chose to move to 9015 Town Center Parkway, Suite 103. The address is easy to find for clients, and close to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and Windsor Reflections memory care residence.

Center staff are among local psychology practices that do consulting work as needed for patients and their families at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. Carter Psychology also does consulting at Manatee Memorial Hospital and Blake Medical Center.

"We can treat in the hospital or on an outpatient basis," said Dr. Michael Spellman, lead psychologist at the new office.

The center is also exploring partnership opportunities with Windsor Reflections, he said.

Spellman, licensed in Florida since 1987, said the average person has become more sophisticated about psychology and mental health issues,

"They know they don't have to wait until they have an illness. Now they know they can come in for counseling to prevent a problem," he said.

Aside from the traditional work with clients seated on a couch, such as couples counseling and treatment for anxiety and depression, the center sees clients about memory problems and eating disorders, another area of expertise.

The center also offers coaching to businesses.

Mentoring, modeling and coaching often don't happen on the job anymore, considering that many workers change jobs every few years, rather than spending a career with one or two businesses.

A psychology practice can take up some of that slack, as well as offering tips to business managers on improving worker retention and satisfaction in the workplace, Spellman said.

"Coaches are people who spark your passion and give you a different perspective," he said.

Carter Psychology Center was founded by Dr. Debra K. Carter, known for her work with the 12th Judicial Circuit in designing procedures to minimize trauma to children whose parents are headed to divorce court. She is also known for her work with the circuit's parenting coordination program.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the residents of Lakewood Ranch. The new location offers both a comfortable environment for our coaching clients and patients and state-of-the art equipment we need to effectively diagnose and treat," Carter said in a press release.
