Mustangs fall 6-4 in state tourney opener

The Lakewood Ranch Mustangs failed to dig out of an early hole despite scoring three times in the last inning, falling 6-4 to the two-time defending state champion Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks of Fort Lauderdale tonight in the Class 6A State Baseball Tournament at Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie.

Correspondent Alan Dell reports the Mustangs got into trouble early, giving up five runs after two innings. The Mustangs got on the board in the bottom of the second when Brad Zunica drove in their first with a double, one of only three hits for the Mustangs through the first five innings.

In the seventh, Seth McGarry delivered a two-run double, and Bryan VanVranken wrangled a bases-loaded walk for Lakewood Ranch, but it was not enough.
