Bail set at $51,000 after Manatee convenience store altercation

MANATEE — A dispute over the purchase of a $1 sausage Saturday escalated into a physical altercation and ended with a woman going to jail on $51,000 bail.

Valerie Maria Marin walked into Bradenton Quick Mart in the 3000 block of 14th Street West shortly after 3 p.m. and paid a dollar for a sausage, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.

Then, Marin went back in the store and put one dollar on the counter for another, the report stated.

But the store’s proprietor later told authorities that he thought he saw Marin eat a third sausage that she did not pay for, the report stated.

Marin demanded the return of her second dollar bill. She and the proprietor got into a physical altercation behind the sales counter over the money, the report states.

During the fight, Marin went behind the counter to retrieve her dollar bill and grabbed the proprietor’s 24-karat gold necklace, which he valued at $600, from his neck, the report states.

The proprietor told authorities that he saw his necklace in Marin’s hand as she left the store with her dollar bill, the report states.

After she was arrested for burglary with battery, Marin told deputies that she did go behind the counter for her dollar, but that she did not take the necklace, the report states.The necklace was not recovered, the report concludes.

Marin was still in jail Sunday, with her bail set at $51,000, according to Manatee County Sheriff’s Office records.
