Man defends himself with crutches

HOLLYWOOD -- William Joseph Knowles looked like an easy mark hobbling along Hollywood Boulevard on crutches but two would-be robbers found out differently.

According to a Hollywood police affidavit released Tuesday, Knowles, 59, used his crutches to battle off two women, one wearing a bikini, after they tried to steal his wallet.

“They came in handy,” Knowles said of the crutches in a phone interview.

Knowles’ alleged attackers, Amber Lynn McKay, 22, and Veronica Anne Lane, 21, both of Hollywood, have been charged with robbery.

Shortly after 9 a.m. Monday, Knowles, of Hollywood, was walking near the 2800 block of Hollywood Boulevard when he said two women, later identified as McKay and Lane, walked up to him and started asking him questions about his injury, the affidavit said.

“They said ‘Oh you hurt yourself,’ “ Knowles said. “One said, ‘I broke my arm,’ and when she lifted up her arm, the other girl went around me.”

One of the women forcefully reached into one of his front pants pockets, he said, and tried to grab his wallet while the other woman tried to restrain him.

“Knowles stated he was in fear for his life at which time he fought off both subjects using his crutches,” the affidavit said.

“I spun around and pinned one up against the wall then the other girl tried to hit me and I swung at her with my crutch,” Knowles said. “I hit them a couple times with my crutches.”

After the women ran away empty-handed, Knowles flagged down an officer that was in the area and gave him a description of the women.

According to the affidavit, the officer caught up with the pair after an employee of a nearby hotel told him two females that matched Knowles’ descriptions were staying at the hotel.

Knowles later identified McKay and Lane as the women he fought away.

McKay and Lane were in a Broward County jail on Tuesday, according to inmate records. While Lane’s bond was set at $7,500, McKay was being held without bond on a violation of probation.

Knowles said he fractured his shin when he fell off a ladder in June. He said he spent a month in the hospital and has since gone through two operations.

Fortunately, he did not re-injure his leg during the struggle. Although he did say his good leg was a bit sore because he had to balance on it while fighting off the women.
