Sarasota homicide suspect arrested

SARASOTA COUNTY -- A 31-year-old Sarasota man was arrested Saturday in connection with the Nov. 21 shooting death of James Brotherton, 49, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Charles L. Hill Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held in the Sarasota County Jail without bond, a report stated.

A witness contacted the sheriff’s office Friday to report that Hill asked him for a ride to Gulf Gate Drive and Gateway Avenue on the night of the slaying to see someone who owed him money.

Just after midnight, Hill contacted the witness and asked to be picked up on U.S. 41 just north of Stickney Point Road.

When Hill got in the car, he told the witness that he shot and killed Brotherton because he “mouthed off” and wouldn’t get in the trunk of his vehicle, according to the report.

An all-night operation resulted in Hill’s arrest as he exited a shopping center.
