Far down the street and around the corner, the unmistakable sounds of marching bands carried through the morning’s chilly air. Chairs were set up along the sidewalk and cars were backed into place as people gathered to watch the annual Veterans Day parade in Palmetto.
Some people huddled in blankets while others seemed unfazed by the cool air.
The crowd became solemn as a color guard led the start of the parade; hats were pulled off and hands covered hearts as the flag passed.
In front of her, small children vied for the attention of the passing bands and floats with shouts and leaps; but Gracie Elrod, who came to the parade with her grandmother, stood clutching her flag.
