Pa. man dies in crash on I-75 in Manatee

MANATEE -- A 72 year-old Pennsylvania man was killed in a rollover accident Saturday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

Howard Phillips was a passenger in a Dodge driven by a 36-year-old man when the crash occurred at 12:30 a.m. on Interstate 75 north, just south of Jeff Young Bridge.

The driver had stopped in the outside emergency lane and was attempting to merge into the travel lane when it got into the path of a Chevy driven by a 57-year-old man, a media release said.

The Chevy struck the Dodge in the left end, causing it to rotate clockwise.

Both vehicles then hit the guard rail on the east shoulder before the Dodge went over the guard rail, rolled down the embankment and landed upside down, the release said. The other vehicle continued and came to a stop in a right hand lane.

The driver of the Dodge was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital in serious condition. The driver of the Chevy suffered minor injuries.

Phillips was not wearing a seatbelt. Charges are pending.
