Fla. Democrats back move to change primary date

Florida Democrats are backing legislation proposed in Tallahassee that would move the state’s presidential primary in 2012 from Jan. 31 to March 6.

The legislation is sponsored by state Sen. Arthenia Joyner, D-Tampa, and state Rep. Martin Kiar, D-Parkland.

“With the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee adopting the same timing rules for the first time ever, setting the example of bi-partisan cooperation, it is our sincere hope that the Republican Legislature will pass the legislation from Sen. Joyner and Rep. Kiar that will ensure full representation of our state at both the Democratic and Republican national conventions,” said Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith in a statement on Thursday.
