Crist, Sink to unite against offshore drilling

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Former Gov. Charlie Crist and last year's Democratic gubernatorial nominee Alex Sink are backing efforts to ban oil drilling off Florida's coast.

Crist, a lifelong Republican until going independent last year, and Sink, the state's former chief financial officer, spoke against drilling Wednesday outside the old Capitol.

Democratic lawmakers have a proposal to ask voters for a state constitutional drilling ban.

There's also a backup plan: a petition drive to put the ban on the November 2012 ballot.

GOP lawmakers criticized Crist for calling a special session last year and asking them to put a proposed ban on last November's ballot. They refused to vote on the proposal.

Republican Gov. Rick Scott has said he's open to the idea of drilling.
