Student injured in Manatee school bus crash, released

MANATEE -- A student and a driver of a car were taken to Blake Medical Center on Thursday afternoon following an accident involving two cars and a school bus, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

The accident happened at about 3 p.m. in the 6400 block of 14th Street West.

A white car heading northbound hit the left side of the bus that was stopped in the opposite direction letting children off, a trooper said. The driver of the white car had originally rear ended another vehicle and went over the median after over-correcting.

The bus was carrying 12 students from Bayshore and Central high schools, according to Margi Nanney, spokesperson for the Manatee County School Board.

She said one of the students was released to a parent following the accident and the rest were taken home by another school bus.

About 15,000 students are transported daily by bus in Manatee County, according to Nanney.

“We are very proud of our bus drivers and our safety record,” she said. “Unfortunately, we have a lot of fender benders because of other drivers who are not paying attention.”
