Baby injured in fall through ceiling in Bradenton

MANATEE -- A 7-month-old baby was critically injured this morning when she fell through the ceiling of a home in the 900 block of 66th Avenue West, Bradenton.

Deputies responded to the accident at approximately 11:35 a.m., according to a report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies determined that a 7-month old girl and a 4-year old girl were taken to the attic of their duplex by a 14-year old girl who was babysitting them.

The 14-year old girl, who does not live there, was apparently scared by allegations that she had stolen a laptop computer, according to the sheriff's report.

The 8-foot ceiling gave way and the baby fell to the floor, suffering an injury to her head. She was flown by helicopter to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg where she was listed in critical condition.

The other two children, including the 4-year-old, were not injured, the report said.

Detectives are investigating the possibility that the girl was a runaway in Bradenton. She is not related to the two younger girls, who are half-sisters, according to sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow.

The baby's mother has been notified, Bristow said.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation was continuing.
