Profusely bleeding man airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center, expected to live

MANATEE -- A 24-year-old man who was covered in blood with two apparent puncture wounds to his head was airlifted by medical helicopter this morning to Bayfront Medical Center, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office reported.

A citizen told deputies he was traveling in the 1300 block of 63rd Avenue about 5:40 a.m. when he noticed a stranger covered in blood, walking along the roadside.

The citizen asked the bloodied man if he needed help. The injured man ask that the police not be called, and requested a ride to Sarasota. The citizen declined and called 911, according to the sheriff's report.

The injured man continued to walk, finally collapsing in the road in the 6300 block of 15th Street East. The citizen directed responding units to that location. When Deputy Justo Cruz arrived, he found the injured man drifting in and out of consciousness. As Cruz rendered first aid, he briefly interviewed the injured man.

The scene where the man collapsed was taped off. A blood trail was tracked for over three miles, to its origin point at the 100 block of West 44th Ave East. That area and a point in-between where the victim possibly may have impaled himself on a wrought iron fence were cordoned off. The injured man is expected to live, but the exact cause and extent of his injuries are unknown to detectives at this time.
