Child attacked by stray dog in Bradenton

MANATEE -- A 3-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was attacked by a stray dog that had wandered into his grandparents’ backyard on Thursday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy was in the yard with his two half-sisters about 4:37 p.m. when the dog came into the backyard and attacked the child. His uncle saw the attack, went outside and hit the dog, picked it up and slammed it to the ground. He then picked up the injured boy and took him into the house, according to the sheriff’s office.

The uncle then went back outside and put the dog in a portable kennel.

The child was flown by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg for treatment of bites on his head and abdomen. Deputies said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Animal Control Services took the dog into custody.

The incident happened in the 900 block of 35th Avenue Drive East, Bradenton.
