ST. PETERSBURG — A drunken driver smashed into a car driven by an Orlando father shortly after midnight Sunday, killing the man and his three sons, police said.
Elroy McConnell, 51, was headed west at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street and 22nd Avenue North when Demetrius Jordan, 20, sped southbound through a red light and collided with him around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, police said.
McConnell’s 2010 Ford Fusion went off the road into a large support beam. Jordan’s 2001 Chevy Impala stopped near a 7-11 signpost.
McConnell and sons Kelly, 19, Nathan, 24, and Elroy III, 28, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Jordan and passenger Mario Robinson, 20, were taken to Bayfront Medial Center with serious injuries.
Jordan, who police said had been driving under the influence, was charged with four counts of DUI manslaughter and a count of DUI serious bodily injury.
Court records show Jordan has been charged with seven separate traffic citations since his 18th birthday.
Last month, he was stopped three times for careless driving, failing to wear a seat belt and running a stop sign.
