Detective suffers minor injury in chase

MANATEE -- Following a report of an armed burglary of a residence in the 2300 block of 52nd Ave. Drive W., a Manatee County Sheriff's Office patrol unit spotted a car matching the description of one used in the crime, traveling at a high rate of speed on Cortez Road from 26th Street West.

The patrol unit followed the vehicle and made a traffic stop in the 200 block of 44th Avenue East about 1:50 a.m. Sunday.

The driver and only occupant exited the vehicle and fled east onto 42nd Avenue. While chasing the suspect, a detective fell through a hedge and collided with a tree, according to a sheriff's report. The other member of the patrol unit, a deputy, apprehended the suspect a short distance away.

Charged with driving while license suspended or revoked and resisting arrest without violence was Antonio Nunez. Investigation revealed Nunez was not involved in the armed burglary.

The detective was treated for a minor injury to his right arm at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.
