4/21 POLICE BRIEFS: Man shot in Palmetto home invasion

MANATEE — A 42-year-old man was shot in the arm during a home invasion in Palmetto early Tuesday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 3:51 a.m., deputies responded to an abandoned 911 call made from a house in the 1200 block of 25th Street East, Palmetto. The front door had been kicked in, and the shooting victim was located in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to his right upper arm, according to a news release.

The victim told deputies that two people had broken into the house, but he couldn’t understand them because he doesn’t speak English, the sheriff’s office said.

It was unknown if any property was taken during the break-in, and the other people in the residence were not injured.

The suspects — one was described as 5-feet, 1-inch tall and the other 5-feet, 9-inches tall and both wearing dark clothing — were not located. Sheriff deputies said it is possible they fled westbound on 25th Street East in a silver 4-door Volkswagen Jetta or Passat.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

3 women arrested after narcotics found at court

MANATEE — Three woman were arrested after they were found with drugs when they showed up for drug court Tuesday morning, according to Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Veronica Smith, 25, was arrested on an active warrant, deputies said. As deputies were searching her, they found a syringe, a bottle of urine, four Roxicodone pills, 23 Soma pills and a spoon.

Smith said the urine and syringe belonged to another woman, 23-year-old Heather Foy. Smith told deputies she and Foy had gotten high in the judicial center bathrooms on several occasions.

Foy had one Roxicodone pill and a tourniquet.

The judge ordered a third woman searched. Caeli Kenney, 19, had two Tamadol pills and four Roxicodone pill hidden in her groin area, deputies said.

As of Tuesday night, all three women were charged with possession of a controlled substance and each had a bond of $1,000, according to the Manatee County jail website.

Man charged with shoplifting, leaving dog

MANATEE — A man was arrested after he left a Chihuahua in a hot car and shoplifted a comb from a grocery store Monday, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Andre A. Gaito, 46, of Venice, was charged with shoplifting and violating a county ordinance by leaving an animal unattended in a vehicle. Gaito told deputies he stole the comb because he wanted to look nice for a woman. He also allegedly passed six bad checks at Sweetbay, stating his friend, who is a prostitute and drug user, needed the money because her life is being threatened.

As of Tuesday night, Gaito remained in jail on a $320 bond, according to the Manatee County jail website.

Teen charged with attempted burglary

MANATEE — An 18-year-old was arrested after a neighbor contacted authorities to report a possible break-in to a residence, according to an arrest report.

Christopher J. Smith, of Bradenton, was located by Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies near the corner of Melody Lane and Orlando Avenue on Monday morning, according to reports. A neighbor reported Smith entered the back yard of a residence in the 700 block of Melody Avenue at 9:30 a.m.

The witness told deputies Smith was wearing gloves on his hands and was clad in all black. Smith had a black sock in his front pocket and was wearing black shorts and a black shirt. A crescent wrench was found behind Smith. He denied it was his and could not explain why it was there, according to the report.

Smith remained in jail Tuesday night on a $2,000 bond for a charge of attempted burglary, according to the Manatee County jail website.

Police say man choked girl during an argument

MANATEE — A 41-year-old man was arrested for child abuse after police say he choked a girl during an argument about her having sex, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Reginald E. Kendall, of Bradenton, was arguing with the child when the discussion turned violent. As the girl was getting choked, she kicked Kendall in the stomach to get away from him. Family members contacted authorities, according to the report. The girl refused medical treatment, according to the report.

As of Tuesday, Kendall remained in jail on a $2,000 bond, according to the jail website.
