The U.S. Coast Guard suspended a search Saturday night for a diver who was reported missing about 28 miles west of Anna Maria Island that morning, according to a released statement.
The 35-year-old diver was free-diving about 115 feet deep without an emergency breathing apparatus at 9:48 a.m., and did not return to the surface, according to the Coast Guard release. The diver was wearing a weighted belt and shorts.
Officials decided to suspend the search at 9:34 p.m. pending further developments.
The Coast Guard was using a 25-foot rescue boat crew from its Cortez station, as well as an HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter from its Clearwater station, the release said. Other agencies assisting in the search including Sarasota Police Department.
