MANATEE — A red Ford Explorer, sought by law enforcement officers in a home invasion robbery, led deputies on a chase this evening through area streets.
The chase began after a bulletin was issued for the Explorer, and a deputy spotted the vehicle shortly after 6:30 p.m.
The fleeing driver ran several red lights along 9th Street East and 301 Boulevard East as he tried to elude deputies. Deputies followed the suspect to the 3800 block of 5th Street East, where the man left the truck with the motor running and entered an apartment.
Several residents pointed deputies to the apartment the man had entered.
Deputies set up a perimeter and used a public address system to ask the suspect to surrender. A man identified as James Howard Jr., 31, of the 6000 block of 19th Street East gave himself up.
A search of the apartment turned up a semi automatic pistol and a small amount of marijuana.
