MANATEE — A woman was arrested on child abuse charges after she allegedly struck her 10-year-old niece with a shoe, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Marie Joachin, 44, is listed as the girl’s guardian, according to a report. Joachin reportedly was not happy with the girl’s language grade. As she was braiding the girl’s hair, she asked her to spell a word. When the girl made a few errors, Joachin reportedly struck her in the back with a sandal, according to the report.
The welt was consistent with the story, according to authorities.
The child fled to a neighbor’s residence at about 8:45 p.m. Thursday and authorities were contacted. Since Joachin’s arrest, the child was placed into care with Child Protection Services, according to the report.
