Jim Leavitt, the only head football coach at USF during the program's 13-year history, has been fired, according to ESPN.com and AOL Sports site Fanhouse.com.
The school had been investigating a report that Leavitt had slapped a player during halftime of a game this past seaon. Leavitt denied the allegation.
USF has scheduled an announcement for noon Friday.
Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney, former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, who has strong ties in the state of Florida from his tenure on Miami's coaching staff, and Michigan offensive coordinator Calvin Magee are expected to be candidates to replace Leavitt, according to ESPN.com.
