Woman killed, 5 injured in I-75 wreck

One woman is dead and five others injured following a two-vehicle crash Saturday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 at U.S. 301 in Ellenton, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at around 4:30 p.m., shutting down I-75 southbound for about an hour and a half. I-75 southbound traffic was diverted at exit 228 (I-275 NB).

As of 6 p.m., I-75 southbound was opened back up, with traffic moving on the shoulder around the crash.

FHP Sgt. William Pascoe said three people have been airlifted to area hospitals and two were taken by vehicle.

Witnesses said the driver of a Toyota Sequoia sports utility vehicle crossed over from the northbound lanes of the highway into the southbound lanes, slamming into a pickup truck heading south.

Pascoe said the driver of the SUV was killed, but whether she crossed over the highway is under investigation.
