Manatee woman found slain; stepson charged with murder

A woman in her 80s has been found slain in her home, with blunt trauma to her upper body, Manatee sheriff's officials said today.

Maxine Hampton's body was discovered after her stepson, Patrick S. Hampton, called 911 late Friday and said he had just killed someone, officials said. He said he would be waiting outside the residence in the 200 block 62nd St. NW.

Deputies responded and the suspect was standing in the driveway, Manatee sheriff's PIO Dave Bristow stated in a release.

Maxine Hampton was found in the master bedroom, lying on the floor, deceased. The victim had blunt trauma to her upper body. The 45-year-old suspect was arrested and has been charged with murder.

Patrick Hampton apparently became angered with his stepmother and killed her, Bristow said. The suspect had been living at the residence. No one else apparently was there when the incident occurred, Bristow added. Maxine Hampton's husband is in the hospital for health reasons, and was there at the time of the incident, officials said.
