The annual Thanksgiving food drive for the Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program will be from 1 to 5 p.m. this Friday in the grass parking lot of the Sarasota County Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd.
The program is a coalition of charitable groups, religious institutions and service agencies, endorsed by the mayors and government leaders in Manatee and Sarasota counties, and staffed completely by volunteers with a desire to help people in need.
About 100 volunteers will be sorting and re-boxing more than 40 tons of food that has been collected at 146 schools, companies and organizations in Sarasota and Manatee counties. In addition to the food, about 1,500 turkeys have been donated to the program by The Joy FM 88.1 from their “T-Shirts for Turkeys” program.
At the end of the day the food will be taken to local food pantries operated by program volunteers. All the food will be given away at no cost to hungry people in time for Thanksgiving.
