A Manatee man was dead and his girlfriend in critical but stable condition early Friday after a domestic incident in the 4100 block of 62nd Street West, according to Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube.
The 43-year-old woman was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg after she was shot twice in the upper body late Thursday, just before midnight, across the street from the couple's residence, according to Steube.
Then at around 3 a.m. the man was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the home by SWAT team members, Steube said.
After the initial shooting, the man holed himself up in the residence, Steube said. Authorities made several attempts to contact him by telephone. They threw a phone through a door before making entry into the home.
The woman and the suspect have at least one child together, Steube said.
No one else was injured in the shooting, he added.
Both identities were not being released by authorities.
