MANATEE -- By a vote of 7-0, Manatee County Commissioners have taken a step toward opposing the expansion of oil drilling in state waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Commissioners voted today to direct their staff to prepare a resolution opposing the expansion of drilling, largely on environmental grounds.
Commissioners are expected to vote on the resolution Nov. 3.
Oil interests, which would like to expand drilling off the Florida coastline, cite the economy, the unemployment rate, and U.S. reliance on foreign oil, in their arguments to the Florida legislature.
Although no member of the Manatee Legislative Delegation attended today's meeting, Rep. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, sent a representative who said Galvano opposed the expansion of coastal drilling.
