MANATEE - About 2,500 Peace River Electric customers were without power today, as crews worked to replace about 100 feet of copper wire that had been stolen, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
Crews discovered the theft today, and officials estimate it was taken sometime in the last month from a substation in the 4700 block of Wauchula Road in Myakka.
The stolen copper ground wires have a value of about $100, according to the sheriff's office. The thief or thieves got access to the wire by cutting through a perimeter fence.
It took five linemen about two hours to fix the lines, according to the sheriff's office.
