Hurricane center: 'Medium' chance that system turns into 'Ana'

Showers and thunderstorms associated with a broad area of low pressure southwest of the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic Ocean have diminished, but conditions still appear favorable that the system could develop into the season's first tropical storm.

The National Hurricane Center at 8 a.m. EDT said there is a 30 percent to 50 percent chance that the system, which is moving to the west at about 10 mph to 15 mph, could develop into a tropical storm during the next 48 hours.

If the system develops into a tropical storm, it would be named Ana.
