MANATEE - Manatee County commissioners have denied a request by Racetrac to build a gas station/convenience store on U.S. 41 at Pearl Avenue. Residents of the neighboring Whitfield Estates neighborhood had vigorously opposed the proposal.

Commissioners rejected the proposal by a 5-2 vote. Commissioners Larry Bustle and Donna Hayes.

But they were outvoted by commissioners Gwen Brown, John Chappie, Ron Getman, Joe McClash, and Carol Whitmore.

About 50 members of the public spoke against the Racetrac proposal.
