Manatee teen shot, killed

MANATEE — An 18-year-old man was killed Tuesday night after he was shot once in the chest, according to Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was shot just before 10 p.m. while in the 4400 block of York Drive, a residential street just south of Cortez Road.

The teen went into cardiac arrest shortly after with paramedics trying to revive him. He was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital, according to paramedics at the scene.

Yellow crime scene tape marked off the west side of a the divided residential street with neighbors looking on from their driveways. Detectives believe the man was possibly shot while outside the residence. A motive was not identified by authorities.

It’s unclear if the teen, who was not identified at the time of this report pending the notification of his family, was a resident at the two-story home, said Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Bill Jordan.

Scott Lilick was with his girlfriend when he said he heard the gunshot down the street.

“We were just walking our dog. It was just insane,” he said.

He said he was one of the first residents to call 911.

Lilick said he possibly saw a white car drive down the dark street just moments before hearing gunfire.

Shortly after he heard a gunshot, a 6-foot man wearing baggy clothing ran down the street and crossed Cortez Road West, he said. Another man trailed behind. He was later questioned by deputies.

Deputies set up a perimeter looking for suspects shortly after the shooting along Cortez Road.

Detailed suspect description was not available Tuesday night and no arrests were made, Jordan said.
