Manatee loses civic leader

Manatee County lost a community leader this weekend.

Steve Mills, vice president and regional trust manager at Whitney National Bank, died Saturday, a family friend and former colleague confirmed Sunday night. He was 52.

Mills was on the board of the Manatee Community Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Manatee County. He was president-elect of the latter, said Glen Fausset, former president of First National Bank.

Mills also served on the board of Hospice, was a board member at Bradenton Country Club and was involved with the youth program at Saints Peter & Paul the Apostles Church.

“He served his customers well and donated his time to civic organizations — always,” Fausset said. “It wasn’t something that he just did sporadically.”

Fausset worked with Mills at Ellis First National Bank, First National Bank and then at Whitney.

“Steve was one of those people that everyone liked,” Fausset said. “He was a very easygoing, likeable guy that everyone was comfortable with.”

Mills, a native of Anderson, Ind., moved to the area in late 1970s. He was a graduate of the University of South Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Sally; sons, Matt, 27, and Ryan, 26; father, Milton; and mother, Mildred.

Services at Saints Peter & Paul are pending.
