Pregnant woman charged with neglect in Palmetto

PALMETTO — Palmetto police arrested a pregnant woman officers said was drunk and sitting on a curb as her 19-month-old son wandered a parking lot, according to a Palmetto Police Department report.

A witness called police at 5:40 p.m. Sunday when he found the boy wandering around a Dumpster area of the Publix shopping center in the 800 block of Tenth Street West.

Guadlia Bravo, 29, denied the child was hers.

When police arrived, Bravo admitted to officers to being seven months pregnant and to being the boy’s mother. Emergency workers were called to the scene and took Bravo to the hospital for observation. A check of a diaper bag on Bravo’s stroller revealed several cans of beer.

After doctors cleared Bravo at the hospital, she was taken to the Palmetto police department where she urinated on herself during processing. A blood test done on Bravo showed her blood alcohol level at 0.342, more than four times the legal limit of 0.08, according to police.

Officers arrested her on a charge of child neglect and she was being held at the Manatee County jail on $20,000 bond.
