School board OKs land buy for new Palmetto school

The Manatee County School Board approved Monday night the purchase of land for a new Palmetto Elementary School. The end result: the opening of a new school in August 2010.

It's a four-party agreement between the board, the City of Palmetto, the Boys and Girls Club and Just for Girls. The closing is set for June 18 with construction starts June 19, according to Superintendent Tim McGonegal.

"It's long overdue to provide Palmetto Elementary students and teachers a real state of the art facility," McGonegal said.

The purchase price for the school land site is about $1.1 million, according to Mark Barnebey, special council for the school board. That includes about $791,000 from the board, $174,000 from the Boys and Girls Club and $115,000 from Just for Girls, he said.
