Sheriff's office investigating hanging death in Manatee

MANATEE - The Manatee County Sheriff's Office was investigating the death of a man found hanging in a residence in the 5400 block of Fourth Street East, Bradenton. Investigators believe the death was a suicide, according to sheriff's spokesman Dave Bristow.

Juan Mendez Cruz, who was in his 20s, was found dead about 1:15 a.m. this morning by one of his roommates, according to a news release.

Late Thursday, Cruz had drank several beers when he asked one of his roommates for a telephone so he could make a call. His roommates said they went to bed about 10:30 p.m. or 11 p.m., and the phone indicates Cruz made a call at 11:51 p.m., according to the sheriff's office.

About 1:15 a.m., one of the roommates woke up to use the restroom, which is outside. He found Cruz hanging from a wooden door frame with the cord from the satellite dish wrapped around his neck. He woke up his roommates, and then went to a neighbor's to call 911, the sheriff's office said.

Paramedics pronounced Cruz dead at the scene.
