Manatee has first confirmed case of swine flu

MANATEE - Manatee County has its first confirmed case of swine flu, local health officials reported today.

The 2-year-old girl is at home and under treatment, said Dr. Gladys Branic, director of Manatee County Health Department.

The child did not attend day care or any school, Branic said.

The swab test was taken at a local physician’s office and sent directly to a state lab in Tampa. Tests at the state lab confirmed a 95-99 percent probability of H1N1 flu, Branic said.

“This is a mild case, and the child is doing better,” Branic said. She urged the public to stay calm but vigilant.

“Now more than ever it is important to be vigilant about washing your hands,” Branic said. “We expected to get a case. It was just a question of when.”
