One person is dead Sunday after a vehicle carrying three or four people plunged off the bridge leading from Bradenton to the islands. The accident occurred just after 3 a.m.
Emergency personnel sped to the scene and two passersby dove in the water to try to rescue the passengers.
Manatee County Emergency Services chief Larry Leinhauser said at 9 a.m. that one man died, one was critically injured, one was hospitalized not with life-threatening injuries and one might be missing.
Interpreters who spoke with the Hispanic passengers said they were told that there was a fourth occupant, but the passersby - and later emergency services divers - could not find a fourth. The search continues.
