ANNA MARIA -- Jim Johnston retires Sunday as director of music ministries at Roser Memorial Community Church, 512 Pine Ave.
Johnston, with Roser four years, brought a vision of how he wanted the music ministry to look and a strong background as organist and traditional church music, choir directing, leading children's music and directing a handbell choir, according to church officials.
"He has used all of his knowledge and experience to mold our program with new ideas and encouraged the best of what Roser had into a strong viable music ministry," Church Administrator Bev Shepperson said in a press release. "We thank him for all of his efforts."
Johnston directed three Christmas Cantatas and three Lent Cantatas with an orchestra ensemble accompanying the Chancel Choir.
During Roser's Centennial year, Johnston commissioned a choral piece to enhance the final event of the celebration.
"These musical experiences during our worship service have been very well received by the Roser Church family," Shepperson said in the release. "Jim also created the Roser Concert series three years ago as a community outreach for Roser Church. These concerts have been enthusiastically received and attended by those on Anna Maria and throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties."
He's also credited with selecting "wonderful" anthems, offertories and prayers each week of the year to enhance the worship experience.
"His expertise at the organ in choosing and playing an organ selection for the Introit, Prelude or Offertory has been his personal praise to God," Shepperson said. "He has encouraged us to use our musical talents in praise and worship to God.
"We will miss him but, he has clearly earned his retirement."
The community is invited to hear Johnston play the organ and direct the Chancel Choir during the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday with refreshments in the Narthex afterward.
