What: Manatee United Methodist Church

When: In 1842, following the end of the Seminole War, a few families crossed over to the southern banks of the Manatee River and established Manatee Village. Manatee Methodist Church was chartered in 1849.

History: Manatee Methodist was the first Protestant church established south of Tampa Bay on the Gulf Coast. In 1866, the 1860 Court House was sold at auction for $128 to the Methodist Episcopal Church South. A steeple and small bell were added and the Methodists finally had their own house of worship.

Anniversary events:

10:30 a.m. Laity Sunday with special testimonies and music.

6:15 p.m. Oct. 22, meal and old-fashioned hymn sing;

7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, The Lighthouse Band;

10:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26 Anniversary Sunday worship followed by picnic on the grounds at noon;

6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, "Manatee Picnic," a musical presented by Jesus and Me children.
