SARASOTA -- The Tabernacle Church, a 750-member nondenominational house of worship in the Sarasota area since its founding in 1955, is taking a major step forward with a $7 million expansion project.
A ground-breaking ceremony will follow a special combined 10 a.m. worship service Sunday.
A picnic will take place on the grounds, 141 DeSoto Road, following the ground-breaking. Bring a picnic lunch. Beverages will be provided.
Senior Pastor Dwain Kitchens has served since 2005 after succeeding Neville Gritt, who retired after pastoring the Tabernacle Church for 32 years. Kitchens, who pastored First Baptist Church of Bradenton from 1997 to 2003, said the Great Recession derailed church plans for seven years -- until now.
"We just felt the time was ready," Kitchens said. " We felt like it was time to move forward with area growing and UTC Mall going in. It was a step of faith."
