UPCOMING EVENTS

Concert to benefit youth camp: Manatee Youth For Christ and Sozo are sponsoring a concert at 5:30 p.m. today at 609Ninth St. W., Palmetto, to raise funds to send underprivileged kids to summer camp. Mother's Day music: Bring mom to hear the spirited gospel singing and playing of Don and Jadene Boot at the 10:45 a.m. service Sunday at Oneco First Baptist Church, 1700 51st Ave. E., Bradenton. Information: 941-755-1690.

Hear the bells: Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 7461 Prospect Road, Sarasota, hosts the Handbells and Spirit Bells of Concordia University in Irvine, Calif., under the direction of Dr. Herbert Geisler and Nancy Jessup at 7 p.m. May 15. The ringers are selected from Concordia's four handbell ensembles, one of the largest collegiate handbell programs in thecountry. A free will offering will be taken. Information: 941-355-2798.

Anticipating Pentecost: The OMC, a group of churches and organizations in what was Old Manatee County, will conduct a week of prayer and fasting in various locations May 17-26 in preparation for Pentecost. On May 19, a prayer service will be held at the OneOMC office, 1215 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton. All who want to see and expect by faith a "Greater Pentecost" are invited. Blessing of the Animals: Temple Emanu-El, 151 McIntosh Road in Sarasota, will host its fourth annual event at 10 a.m. May 19. This is the only pet blessing in Sarasota-Manatee's Jewish community and all are invited to the celebration of the gift of animal companionship and the special role pets play in our lives. The blessing will begin with casual socializing as well as light refreshments for both humans and animals. Each pet will receive an individual blessing from Rabbi Brenner J. Glickman. Family pet portraits will also be taken. Pets of all types are welcome. All animals should be leashed or otherwise contained, and there will be plenty of room for active pets to be walked around and exercised. Information: 941-379-1997.

Musical based on Jonah: The youth choir of St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church, 11315 Palmbrush Trail, Lakewood Ranch, presents the musical "Jonah's Druthers" at 6 p.m. May 19 in a dinner theater format. Based on the book of Jonah, the play was written by Cyndi None, Rob Howard and David Guthrie and directed by Beth Von Ende. Bible blessing: Living Lord Lutheran Church, 11107 Palmbrush Trail, Lakewood Ranch, will conduct a dedication and blessing of Bibles at services at 8, 9:15 and 10:45 a.m. May 20. Participants are invited to bring their favorite Bible to be blessed and to share stories about their personal or family Bible by writing a short paragraph and dropping it in the "Bible Stories" box in the narthex before May 16. "The Sky's the Limit" VBS: Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church', 7461 Prospect St., Sarasota, hosts Vacation Bible School for children ages 4-11 from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m. June 24-28. Church of the Trinity: 7225 N. Lockwood Ridge Road, southern Manatee County, has a traditional Sunday service 9:15 a.m. Sundays and a contemporary service with children's sermon at 11 a.m.

Congregation Ner Tamid: Jewish Living and Learning Sunday School for children ages 4-14 meets 9 a.m. Sundays by appointment, at Lakeside Clubhouse, 3817 40th Ave. W., Bradenton. Congregational United Church of Christ: The Congregational United Church of Christ Thrift Store, 5324 26th St. W., Bradenton, has expanded its store in Saddle Creek Plaza. Ellenton United Methodist Church: 3607 U.S. 301 N., Ellenton, has an all-you-can eat pancake breakfast 8-10 a.m. the first Saturday of the month. Adult Sunday School classes are at 9:45 a.m. Sundays in the Fellowship Hall, led by Pastor Bruce Ebert. Methodist Men meet 8:30 a.m. the second Wednesday of the month. Living Lord Lutheran Church: Our Daily Bread/Project 5000 at Living Lord Lutheran Church, 11120 S.R. 70 E., Lakewood Ranch, is collecting grocery bags filled with unbreakable containers to feed local families. Each bag will feed a family of four for two days or a family of two for four days. Also, the Quilters and Crafty Ladies meet 3 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month to make lap robes and quilts for the needy in Manatee County. Longboat Island Chapel: As part of its Aging in Paradise Resource Center, which addresses the issues of aging, introduces its memory loss support group to the communities of Sarasota and Manatee. The group meets 11 a.m.-1 p.m. every other Wednesday. Information: 941-383-6491.

Manatee Spiritual Center: The Beyond Sunday Conversation Group, meets 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday at the Manatee Spiritual Center, 1327 U.S. 301 N., Palmetto. Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3131 61st St., Sarasota, has changed to its Sunday worship service to 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with a coffee hour following. Tuesday Bible studies continue in the Fellowship Hall with Pastor Chris Carlson. Times are 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Orthodox Catholic: The Synod of Governing Bishops for the Holy Orthodox Catholic Church announced the opening if their new church temporarily at 2700 S. Tamiami Trail, Suite 11B, Sarasota. The Very Rev. Archbishop Jacob J. K. Longacre was appointed first pastor. All seven sacraments will be available in the Orthodox Form by making an appointment with the pastor at 941-954-0330.

Temple Beth Israel: The Social Action Committee of Temple Beth Israel collects donations for the Bill Galvano One Stop Center. Needed: funding for medication, socks, mosquito repellent, toilet articles and soap, shoes, jeans, baby diapers and formula, reading glasses and bicycles. Donations can be given directly to the One Stop Center, 701 17th Ave. W., or dropped off at Temple Beth Israel, 567 Bay Isles Road, Longboat Key.

Temple Emanu-El: Under the direction of its Social Action Committee, Temple Emanu-El, 151 McIntosh Road, Sarasota, continues its food drive for those in Sarasota-Manatee who go hungry. Nonperishable boxed and canned foods may be placed in a marked bin in the Temple lobby during business hours and before and after Shabbat worship services. All donations benefit the kosher food pantry at Jewish Family and Children's Services or All Faiths Food Bank. Information: 941-966-9561.

The class consists of a guided meditation, a short talk and an opportunity for questions and answers. Each talk is part of a series, yet is self-contained.
