Jewish Brigade: The community is invited to explore the hidden story of World War II’s Jewish Brigade at a program sponsored by Temple Emanu-El’s Adult Education Committee 2-4 p.m. July 25 at Temple Emanu-El, 151 McIntosh Road, Sarasota. The program begins with a showing of the film “In Our Own Hands,” the story of Jewish soldiers who fought the Nazis. Following the film, former Jewish Brigade soldier Abe Zeewy will speak about his experiences and answer questions from the audience about life in the Jewish Brigade. Cost: $5. Helping Louisiana: Join members of the Moorings Presbyterian Church the last week in July volunteering for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance by helping families in New Orleans rebuild their homes. The group will travel to New Orleans from Naples by van. Skilled and unskilled team members are accepted, but those with construction skills are especially needed. Summer Sizzle: WestCoast Church, 11750 U.S. 301, Parrish, will have its annual Summer Sizzle Community Outreach Event 3-7 p.m. Aug. 7. It’s a free event that includes food, games, waterslides, bounce houses, games, crafts and more.

Vacation Bible School: Saint Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church, 11315 Palmbrush Trail, Lakewood Ranch, is hosting its annual summer Vacation Bible School 9 a.m.-noon Aug. 9- 13. This year’s theme is “Cokesbury’s Galactic Blast.” Campers will enjoy theme-filled days that focus on the earth, the moon, the stars, comets and supernovas as they discuss biblical themes tying into the galaxy. Open house: Chabad of Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch is holding is sixth annual open house noon-1 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Chabad Jewish Center, 11509 Palmbrush Trail. A buffet lunch, video presentations, meet and greet with Rabbi Mendy and Chanie Bukiet, activities for children, and more are planned. Admission is free. Bereavement Support: Temple Emanu-El and Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) announce a new partnership to help individuals struggling with grief and loss. A bereavement support group meets 10-11:30 a.m for six consecutive Wednesdaysthrough Aug. 25. The group will meet at Temple Emanu-El, 151 McIntosh Road, Sarasota, and will be facilitated by Rabbi Brenner Glickman and JFCS Jewish Healing Coordinator Susan Finkelstein. Shabbat services: Temple Emanu-El, 151 McIntosh Road, Sarasota, invites the community to share in the summer season of Shabbat worship services. Jewish Gathering: For the fourth year, Temple Emanu-El sponsors the East County Jewish Gathering at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at Summerfield Park, 6402 Lakewood Ranch Blvd. Jewish and interfaith families are invited. Attendees may bring a picnic dinner or purchase fresh pizza for $1 a slice; cold soda, juice, and water will be provided. There will also be free ice cream treats.
